w2w version 0.95

I have updated w2w to resolve a bug that occured when used on a directory with many files in it (such as an actual website... :-) ).

Many thanks to Reborg for his help with debugging!

Re: w2w version 0.95
Each time iWeb is published to a folder, it changes all of the modified dates of each pages' contents. Does w2w still know which pages were truly modified by me and which ones to just leave alone? I haven't given it a try yet because I have a ton of large podcast files that I don't want to chance and have w2w reload them -- it would take hours and perhaps a day. Please write back to me personally so I can know if indeed w2w would save me time as I hope very much that it will.

My biggest problem is with the way iWeb names the folders for new blog and podcast entries! It takes me a long time to weed through and compare which folders I have already uploaded and which one is the new blog or podcast. I sure wish iWeb would allow me to name the folder as I so choose or at the very least use some sort of logical serial number that increases each time. As it is, the list I get when I open my website using Cyberduck and the list I get when I open my published folder on my harddrive are not in the same order at all even if I click on the Name column in both views. You'd think they would alphabetize the same way, but they don't.

I'm really hoping w2w is going to help me with this problem! Thank you!

Re: w2w version 0.95
Hi!

The quick answer is yes, w2w knows which pages were truly modified since it only looks at the content of the file. However, the first time you use w2w, it unfortunately has to upload everything. The way it keeps track of which files are changed is that it keeps an internal database of all the files (the name and the checksum) and compare the actual file to what it looked like last time the site was uploaded. If it can't find the file in the database w2w will upload it, which is why it will upload the entire site the first time.

You should be able to "trick" it though, to skip the initial upload. If you prepare an upload entry, but instead of the remote address you put in localhost and your local username and passwd and for example Desktop/test/ as remote path. Then turn on the ftp-server on your computer (from System Preferences) and press "upload" in w2w. This should copy everything from your "Publish-to-folder" to the new folder (Desktop/test/ or whatever you put in) and at the same time putting every file in the database of w2w. If you then change the remote address, username, passwd, and path to your actual server, w2w should remember the files anyway and your set. To do this, your "Publish-to-folder" should be up to date with the folder on the server, since w2w will assume that this is the case.

Fredrik

Re: w2w version 0.95
I tried to "trick" w2w as you instructed, but absolutely nothing happens when I click Upload.

Here are the settings I used:

Name: localtest
Folder: (I browsed to the "Publish-to-Folder" folder that iWeb saved my latest files)
Remote server: localhost
Remote username: Christi Milligan (which is the Admin name for my Powermac G5 computer)
Remote password: I entered my Admin password for my PowerMac G5 computer
Remote folder: Desktop/lifebitesORGtest/ (I made this folder on my desktop)

I also went into my System Preferences>Sharing and checked "FTP Access". I did not find anything in System prefs called "ftp-server", so that may be my problem.

Thanks for any help you can send my way.

Re: w2w version 0.95
Hello again!

When you say that nothing happens, does that mean that you neither see a spinning circle nor get an error message?

I think it would be better if you use the short username instead of the full. The short username is the name of your home folder and doesn't include spaces or other "strange" characters.

If this doesn't work, you could turn on the debugging by quitting w2w and typing the following in the terminal.
defaults write nu.wallner.w2w Debug -bool yes

Start w2w and try to update the site, then start Console.app (it is located in Applications:Utilities) an try to find the relevant entries (they should start with the time followed by w2w). Mail those to me and I will try to find the problem.

It was FTP Access I meant, since I don't use an english version of OSX, I didn't know the exact wording.

Fredrik

w2w looks to be the answer to my prayers....but I get an error when I try to run it:

Re: w2w version 0.95
Hi Simon!

Error no 5 is a proxy error. Do you use a proxy for your ftp-connections? If you could send me some more info on the email address in the head of this page I can try to help you.

Does w2w run on OS X 10.3.9? When I launch it bounces in the dock then disappears.

Thanks!

Re: w2w version 0.95
Hej.

I recently started getting curl error 5 messages. I am not behind a proxy, nothing has changed either. Not sure why the program stopped working.

Hi!

I have tried to look into this problem but I have so far failed in finding a solution. I am however working on a version that doesn't use curl, I just don't have quite as much time as I would like...

Re: w2w version 0.95 (12)
I'm having a problem - hope you can help. This is the scenario - I just uploaded my iweb to my new site via w2w. Viewed it on a Windows compuer - problem -- fonts aren't right. So, return to iweb, make the font change, save the file, then File, Save to Folder. I save to the same folder as before.

I open W2W. It still has all the information from last time including the position of the "save to" file. Click on upload. Flashing circle comes on for less than 2 seconds and flashes off. It wouldn't have been able to connect in that time let alone send anything up that had been changed.

The only way I seem to be able to get anything up is to save the new file in a different place - eg desktop, then tell w2w the position of the new file, and then it does a full upload.

Can you get a feel for what I may be doing wrong please as the only way I can get it to work is by creating an entirely new file. Thanks, hope you can help!

Re: w2w version 0.95 (12)
Hi!

I suppose that you checked that the remote site hadn't changed after the first upload, but in general, if you only chaged a font there is probably just a small textfile that needs to be uploaded so it could be extremely quick.

In order to help you more, I would like you to read my second repsonse to Christi above and enable the debugging mode and send me the report.

Re: w2w version 0.95
Hi All

I have just downloaded this program and after spending a lot of time getting the CURL Error 5 message, I found the cause...

The problem was that I had a "\" in the path....I guess I've spent too much time on windows machines

Re: w2w version 0.95
The problem with the CURL Error 5, appears to be related to the length\format of the source directory.

beta-testing anyone?
I have made a new version of w2w that should solve the cURL error. If anyone would like to help me test it, please let me know.

Re: w2w version 0.95
Error no 8 means: FTP weird server reply. The server sent data curl couldn't parse.

I have never seen it before, but I suppose that your server replied in an unexpected way. In order to help you more, I would need you to generate a debug log as I described to Sally in this post

To be able to answer I have to have some information as to what happens. Do you get any error messages? Is the update quick or slow?

Re: w2w version 0.98
The message on my webpage is this:

Index of /

cgi-bin/
deian/
Apache/2.2.10 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.10 OpenSSL/0.9.8b DAV/2 mod_auth_passthrough/2.1 mod_bwlimited/1.4 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 mod_perl/2.0.4 Perl/v5.8.8 Server at www.deian.com Port 80

I'm afraid I have no idea what this means and would appreciate any advice.

Thank you very much.

Re: w2w version 0.98
That message indicates that nothing is uploaded to your web site. What I was more interested in though is if you get any error messages in w2w and how the upload process behaves.

If you don't get any error messages I need you to turn on debugging to help you more. You do this by writing the following in the terminal (quit w2w first): defaults write nu.wallner.w2w Debug -bool yes

That should produce a file in your Logs-directory (could be found if you browse to your home directory -> Library -> Logs) called w2w.log. If you send me that file I could try to see what's wrong, or you could open it up yourself (a double click will open it in Console.app).

Re: w2w version 0.98
I have tried this but entering
defaults write nu.wallner.w2w Debug -bool yes
doesn't generate the log you were hoping for. Am i entering it correctly - I've copied it directly from your post. Many thanks.

Re: w2w version 0.98
It looks like you entered it correctly. The logfile isn't created immediately though, you need to run w2w again and try to make an update.

If you would like to confirm that you entered the Terminal command correctly you could try to enter defaults read nu.wallner.w2w Debug and that should return the number 1 or "yes"

Re: w2w version 0.95
Hi!
cUrl error 9 is an access denied error. Probably you have filled in the remote directory incorrect. You would get that error if you can log on to the server but don't have the permissions to change directory.

I did a search on this error as I was getting it when setting up my site for the first time using W2W. I tried changing the directory setting which my hosts had given me but in the end all I had to do was put a '/' on the end of the server address

Re: w2w version 0.95
Hi There.

I had used W2W very successfully to upload from iweb08 a couple of months back when I was started to learn about websites for my new business. I uploaded a few test pages.

Now I have fine tuned the website details and am trying to upload the revised site. The problem is that lots of the pages are not being uploaded (Approx 50% of the pages).

Do you know if I am doing something wrong?

Thanks

Re: w2w version 0.95
Hi!

From what you said, I can't say that you made a mistake. Did you change where on the server you publish to (the remote folder)?

You could try to prepare a log file and send it to me. Quit w2w, open Terminal.app, type "defaults write nu.wallner.w2w debug true" without quotes, restart w2w and try to upload. The logfile should appear in your home folder under Library:Logs. If you send that to me I can look at it and see if I can find anything.

Re: w2w version 0.95
Hi!

Error no 6 is "Couldn't resolve host. The given remote host was not resolved." So you probably misspelled the name for the remote host. Remember that you should not include the initial ftp:// in the host name.
