New updates to w2w!

I have now updated the public version of w2w to fix the problem with cUrl error no 5. The new version, 0.98, also includes automatic update checks and can be found here.

I have also made a new beta that shows some progress information during the upload process. If you are interested in trying that version (and are not already in the beta-program) please let me know in a comment or email.

cUrl error 7
Hi!
cUrl error no 7 means
Failed to connect to host.

The exact reason for this is hard to say from this, but I would look at the information in the edit panel and especially the field called "Remote server". If you would like to have more information, please let me know.

Re: cUrl error 7
Hi Fredrik,

Thank you very much for your reply.

I have checked all the details in the edit panel, and they seem to be all correct. Unfortunately I still keep getting that error.

Have you got any other ideas?

Many Thanks,

Sally

Re: cUrl error 7
Hi!

To help you I need you to turn on debugging by writing the following in the terminal (quit w2w first): defaults write nu.wallner.w2w Debug -bool yes

That should produce a file in your Logs-directory (could be found if you browse to your home directory -> Library -> Logs) called w2w.log. If you send me that file I could try to see what's wrong, or you could open it up yourself (a double click will open it in Console.app).

Regards,
Fredrik

Re: New updates to w2w!
Hi - I have just redone my website on a mac and am trying to publish. My old site was on ixwebhosting.com. I have downloaded w2w, but my new website isn't uploading. I am entering:
name
folder
ftp.sukhmanikaur.com
gmlugo
password
sukhmanikaur.com.

I don't get any error messages, it just doesn't upload. Can you please tell me if the information I am enetering looks like it is correct?
Thank you,

Re: curl error no 8
cUrl error 8 means that the server sent some information that cUrl couldn't understand. It's strange that that should happen all of a sudden. According to the cUrl help this means that "The given remote server is probably not an OK FTP server". Have you tried to log in with another ftp-program?
You could send me the log file and I will look at it.

Re: New updates to w2w!
Hi,

This seems like it will be a wonderfully helpful program if I can figure out what I must me doing wrong. My problem is that no matter what folder or directory I enter into the "Remote Folder" field, it always uploads to exactly the same place, which is the main directory.

I have two sites hosted together, and the hosting I use is being weird about my blog folder (won't delete or move it), so I really need the uploads/updates to go to the right place.

Any ideas?? I use my pc for my other site, and have a program that has built in ftp, and have never had a problem getting it to the right remote directory.

Thanks!

Re: New updates to w2w!
Hi!

I dont know for sure why you are having this problem. It might be that the remote folder doesn't exist or can't be created and w2w therefor put everything into the main directory. That is the only idea I have right off, if you turn on debugging and send me the logfile I would gladly look at it to see if I can help you more.

Re: Turning on Debugging
Hi again,

I see the directions for the debugging, but am sorry to say I'm pretty new at this stuff and don't understand them. What "terminal" am I entering those directions into?
Posted 11 years, 5 months ago by Sheraline • • • Reply
Re: Turning on Debugging
The terminal is a program called terminal.app and is located in your program folder. When you start the program you will see a white window where you can enter the text. Remember to close w2w before you enter the commands.

Okay, I've just emailed that log file to the email address at the top of the page. Is that the right one?

Thanks.

Re: New updates to w2w!
Hello - I think I have worked out what is happening. I think that W2W is uploading the files but creating a new directory within the root directory of the host rather than in the /public_html directory. Is there a way of correcting this so that the website can be accessed?
Thx

Re: New updates to w2w!
If that's the problem you need to change the setting for the "remote folder" to match the correct one at the host. That is, /public_html/yoursite

Curl error 8 & 67
I was setting up a new website today and everything was going great until my most recent attempts to reload the pages. I used the program successfully a dozen times today but now I'm getting nothing but error messages. Any ideas? I'll send the log, in case that helps. Appreciate your program and your help.

Re: Curl error 8 & 67
Hi Chris!

From the log file it looks like you had a problem with the password (that is error no 67). One day I will fix the error messages so they are more informative...

Kind regards,
Fredrik

Re: New updates to w2w!
I was getting error 7 and I tried the debugging and reinputting the information and now I am getting error 67. I didn't put anything in the remote folder space is that important?

Re: New updates to w2w!
Hi!

Error 7 is could not connect to host and 67 means that w2w couldn't login because the username or password was rejected by the server. So I would suggest that you try to enter your information again to make sure you haven't mistyped anything.

The fact that you leaved the remote folder field empty shouldn't affect this problem. However, most hosting services need you to put a folder name there, it could be your domain name or www or public_html or something else, you should be able to find out from your hosting provider.

Re: New updates to w2w!
Hi,

I am also getting Error no. 8. w2w worked perfectly for a long time, but it has been acting strangely for the past few months. at first, it used to crash (take an eternity to upload, and never finish). Then as of yesterday another problem started.

The home page of my website was being redirected to a longer address, and the new uploads of w2w wouldn't apply to that longer address. for example instead of going to:

http://www.xy.com/home.html

it would redirect me to:

http://www.xy.com/x-y/home.html

and when I clicked on my other links I would always get that extra x-y in the address.

all my new uploads would apply to http://www.xy.com/home.html but not to http://www.xy.com/x-y/home.html

I downloaded the new version today (0.98), but nothing changed. I thought something must be wrong with my index.html, or home.html files, so in a moment of fury, I went to my host website, and deleted all the files in my public-html folder. then went back to iweb, made minor changes to every single page, and uploaded with w2w again, hoping for a fresh start. But my website won't load up at all (and it still gets redirected to that longer address).

Then I decided to remove my website from w2w, and reinsert it... Then I got Curl error no. 8.

I read your post to someone above, that you said it may be because of a wrong password. So I reinserted my password, and have hit upload again, and now it has been uploading for the past hour (it is not that big of a website and should not take more than 10 mins max to upload).

Any idea what I should do?

Thanks,

Re: New updates to w2w!
Hi!

I can't really say what is causing your problems. Curl error no. 8 is "FTP weird server reply. The server sent data curl couldn't parse." and that doesn't really help in the debugging. To help further, I need you to turn on debugging and send me the logfile as described above.

Kind regards,
Fredrik

Re: New updates to w2w!
Hi,

I designed a website using iWeb on my Mac (OS X, Snow Leopard). I purchased a domain on NameCheap.com. I don't know much about computer coding and such, so please let me know what I'm doing wrong without sounding complicated:

I saved my iWeb project under a Sites folder on my Mac. On w2w, I put in the following information:

Folder - (browsed from the iWeb file saved on my computer)
Remote server - mydomain.com
Remote username - myusername@mydomain.com
Remote password - the password I used to register my domain
Remote folder - /myusername/public_html

After clicking upload, it takes about an hour before it finally comes up with error 7. Reading your replies to previous comments about this error, it seems I may have put in some wrong information but I'm not sure how to fix that.

Because my domain is from NameCheap.com, I've put in this info based on their guide here: http://namecheap.simplekb.com/kb.show?show=article&articleid=181&categoryid=27

Did I misinterpret something? What should I do so my iWeb can be successfully published to mydomain.com? (note: mydomain.com, myusername etc. is just to describe what I mean) And why does it take so long to 'upload' only to give me an error message? I've tried this multiple times but nothing is working.

Thank you for any help you can give.

Re: New updates to w2w!
Hi,

I cannot say exactly why it takes an hour before coming up with the error. Is it a large site?
If I read the linked guide, it seems that you should put in either /home/myusername/public_html or just public_html as Remote folder. If this doesn't solve the problem, please try to login using a common ftp-client, such as Cyberduck (cyberduck.ch), and let me know if that works.

Kind regards,
Fredrik

remote username: name
remote password: password
remote folder: public_html

the thing is i didn't know about remote folder. maybe the website had one but i couldnt check it anymore because it wont open at all.

Re: New updates to w2w!
Hi!

You do not need to rebuy anything, nor did you corrupt the site. You need to contact the company where you bought the web hotel and ask them for how to upload your site via ftp. Then they will tell you what to use for username, password, remote server and remote folder. I do not understand what you meant by "i browsed to the main folder". What folder did you enter here?

Kind regards,
Fredrik

Remote Folder problem
The folder that I specify in the remote folder box is always ignored, and all of my files end up being uploaded to my main parent directory on my web host's server. Any idea what the problem is?

Re: Remote Folder problem
Hi!
I don't know exactly what the problem may be, it could be that you entered the remote folder in a way the server doesn't recognize. Try to check the information again, and if it doesn't work, turn on debugging and sens me the log.

Re: New updates to w2w!
Hello and firstly thank you for allowing us to use your w2w programme.
For some reason I am having difficulties with curl error 67 that shows after a long time trying to upload the website. I use a Mac and never wanted to use the mac website so am very thankful of your ftp programme. Any ideas what I need to do to put things back again? Ged

Re: New updates to w2w!
Error 67 is a login error, so please check your login credentials, and that you can login using a different FTP-software, such as cyberduck.ch

That error means CURLE_COULDNT_RESOLVE_HOST, that is, the given hostname couldn't be found. Check your spelling and try again.

Re: New updates to w2w!
HI,
I have been using w2w for a long time now and have never had any issues until today. I keep getting curl error 8. I followed the previous comments and closed it down and did the library thing and got the message: (8) This doesn't seem like a nice ftp-server response ....what should I do and what am I now doing wrong? Any help would be great, thanks
Posted 7 years, 9 months ago by Kristiin • • • Reply
Re: New updates to w2w!
Curl error 8 is an indication that the ftp-server (that is, where you're uploading your site) isn't working correctly. If you haven't received any news from your service provider that they will change in how you access your site, it's probably temporary. But you can always try with a different ftp-client, such as Cyberduck. If it doesn't resolve you should contact your service provider with an error report, including the Curl error.

Re: New updates to w2w!
First, THANK YOU! I didn't say that before in my last inquiry, and I truly want to thank you for creating w2w and allowing it to be public. Prior to using it, nothing had been compatible with my mac and iweb. And thank you for responding to my earlier question/problem. I called my host and they said that everything is fine on their end..of course. And, when I went to go upload my folder today it went through...or at least I didn't get an error 8 message. However, my site is not changed yet. Usually I see some sign that it went through when I go to it, but so far nothing yet. Do you know if this is normal "wait time" or should I see my upgrades right away? Any help on this part would be great, and thanks again for everything else.

Re: New updates to w2w!
You should see the changes right away. I would try to upload using Cyberduck once to see how that works.
